Men's basketball game notes vs. Mars Hill

By Lauren Phillips

The Bulldogs basketball team played an exciting game last night, winning with a score of 85-62. Head coach Brian Goode was dumbfounded with the turnout of the game. “I have no idea what happened,” said Goode, “It’s a product of the youth on our team.” One very important youth on the team was freshman Odell Turner from Charlotte; he was the second highest scorer of the night. Turner delivered his team to victory with 15 scored points, eight free throws and 17 rebounds. Turner feels as though being a young player helps him bring energy to his team, “with so many rebounds and passes, I help keep the team together,” said Turner. He also felt that being a young and inexperienced player forced him to share the ball more and rely on his teammates. “Our legs aren’t as good as the more experienced players,” he said.

The Bulldogs triumphed over the Lions and overall Turner was happy with the turnout of the game. “This was a big win for us,” said Turner. “We needed to win two games in a row to build momentum for the upcoming conference.”

Wingate Women lose in overtime shocker to Mars Hill

Two streaks came to an end tonight as Mars Hill women pulled off an overtime shocker on the road by upsetting Wingate 101-100.

Snapping a 12 game losing streak Mars Hill improved to (5-20, 2-12 SAC) with great shooting from Junior guard Brittini Young. She was 4-of-6 from behind the arc finishing with a career high 37 points as she led the way for Lions.

“You can’t give up 101 points and expect to win,” said Head Coach Barbara Nelson. “We acted like we’ve never played defense before.” The bulldogs had 9 block shots yet the lions still shot just over 45 percent from the field for most of the game.

Even though the Bulldogs dominated on the boards out rebounding Mars Hill 37-to-50 the team only shot 36 percent field goal percent in the first half. The second half saw better shooting from the field for the bulldogs but 29 turnovers kept lions in control for most of the game.

Sophomore guard, Kurie Washington led the way for the bulldogs with a career high 32 points pouring in 11-of-19 from the field and four-of-six from behind the arc.

Senior center, Stacie Rhodes, led rebounding for the bulldogs with 11 and had 7 blocks, but the Bulldogs were never able to establish a consistent post presence for most of the game.

The lions lived in the paint. Before fouling out sophomore Lions forward Margaret Harvey drove to the basket regularly for layups, adding 24 points.

It was a late game deep ball from behind the arc from guard Brittini Young that tied the game sending it into overtime. During overtime the lions never looked back pushing their lead to five before closing out the game by one. Wingate Head Coach Nelson said, “We allowed way too many open shots.”

Bulldog men get win over Mars Hill

Wingate’s men’s basketball improved to 13-11 overall; 5-7 in the SAC as they cruised to an 85-62 win over Mars Hill on Wednesday night.

Midway in the first half, freshman forward Quan Alexander’s and-one free throw increased the Bulldog lead to 20-15, and the Bulldogs never looked back. While Wingate couldn’t find their usual rhythm behind the three-point arc, eight different players hit field goals to give the team a 36-28 edge at halftime. Alexander finished the night with nine points.

Wingate faltered in the second half against a rejuvenated Mars Hill team and turned the ball over 15 times. Senior guard Larry Staley said, “We just had to keep working hard at that point. Hard work pays off, as they say, and we were able to come back from our mistakes and just work through them.” Staley led all scorers with 20 points. Freshman forward Odell Turner posted a double-double with 15 points and 17 rebounds on the night.

The Bulldogs were able to contain Danny Sanders, a senior guard, to 19 points. Coming into the contest, Sanders was the number two scorer in the SAC with an average 23.4 points per game average.

“Larry did a great job guarding him,” said Wingate head coach Brian Goode. “He jammed him up and did great not letting him dribble. He pulled off a few shots on the dribble but Larry did a nice job with not letting him get comfortable.”

Dion Malachai led the Lions with 11 rebounds and also contributed 14 points. Mars Hill fell to 13-11 overall; 8-6 in the SAC. The Lions went 21-for-36 on free throws, as compared to the 26-for-30 shot by the Bulldogs.

Wingate is a team filled with freshmen; three freshmen are on the starting squad. “That’s bad in the sense that we don’t have a lot of experience,” Goode said. “It’s positive in that they’re so young and naïve that when we’re down, they never thing we’re not good anymore. They just keep working through it.”

The conference race is still very close. “Maybe this game means nothing [for conference standings],” said Goode. “It only means something if we are able to string together a few more. We’ll do the best we can and finish where we finish.”

The Bulldogs are back in action at Newberry on Sat. Feb. 20 at 4 p.m.

Brittini Young of Mars Hill led all scorers with 37 points, 12 of them coming from beyond the 3 point line where she finished 4-for-6.

It was Breast Cancer Awareness night at the gym this evening where coaches, players, fans, staff, and referees were wearing anything from pink shirts to blowing pink whistles.

At halftime of the game, there was a student vs. faculty basketball game.

Mars Hill snapped a 12 game losing streak with their win tonight. They earned a split of the season series, with Wingate taking a 76-73 victory at Mars Hill earlier in the season.

Jessy Keitt of Wingate came off the bench to score 12 points. Five Wingate players scored in double figures.

Kurie Washington of Wingate scored a career high 32 points, 15 of them coming from beyond the arc where she finished 5-for-9.

Stacie Rhodes of Wingate finished with a double-double, scoring 11 points, grabbing 11 rebounds, and chipping in 7 blocks to go along with it. It was her fifth double-double of the season and her third straight. She also had five assists.

The Bulldogs have lost both overtime games they've been in this season. The other was a 65-60 loss to Johnson C. Smith in Charlotte on Nov. 21. They are 3-5 in games decided by five points or less.

Sophomore guard Jaime Vaughn averaged 23.6 points in his last three games. He scored three points tonight.

Catawba scored 55 points off the bench in comparison to Wingate’s 15.

Sophomore guard Chase Smith scored eight points off the bench.

Catawba’s Dominick Reid was charged with an intentional foul on Odell Turner with 2:30 remaining in the second half, which really got the crowd going. Turner made both free throws, but the Bulldogs weren't able to take advantage of the free possession.

Catawba’s Donald Rutherford racked up 30 points. 18 of those points came in the second half.

Catawba is now recruiting internationally. Starting guard Stuart Thompson is from Poynton, England.

Bulldogs freshman guard Quan Alexander was a perfect six-for-six from the free throw line while shooting six-for-eight from the field. Alexander finished with 18 total points.

Bulldogs fall short again at the buzzer

Forward Donald Rutherford scored a career high-tying 30 points to lift the Catawba Indians over Wingate Wednesday night.

A short jump shot by freshman center Odell Turner fell off the rim as time expired to give the Indians (13-7, 6-3 SAC) the 75-73 victory. The Bulldogs (11-10, 4-6) had to go the length of the court after Catawba’s reserve center Lee Martin tip-in with 6.4 seconds left. “We wanted Jaime [Vaughn] to take it to the basket, but he found the open man instead,” Wingate coach Brian Good said.

Despite Turner’s miss, which was very similar to the conclusion of the home Tusculum game, Good was pleased at the play’s execution. “We have gotten better at making the right play.”

Catawba came out gunning from the outside, hitting on 7-of-15 shots from three point range. Although they shot so well against the Bulldog defense, Good stuck to the plan they had prepared. “That’s how we wanted to defend them,” Good said. “We were prepared to make them a jump shooting team.”

Offensively, Wingate’s scoring sheet looked much different than previous games. Freshman forward Quan Alexander lead the team with 18 points. Vaughn had led the team in scoring the last three games, but was held to only three points tonight. “We focused on getting a lot of transition points,” said Turner, who had 14 points and a team high eight rebounds. “We wanted to get somebody else the open shot.”

Rutherford was too tough to handle, though. The senior from Morganton finished with 13 rebounds to go with his second 30 point output of the week. He hit on 13-of-18 shots, 8-of-10 in the second half.

Although the final score was close, the first half was full of runs with each team going up by 10 points in the initial frame. Catawba had its largest lead of 10 before a jump shot by freshman Ethan Kincaid as the half ended.

The Bulldogs came out in the second half with a half court trap on defense, not allowing the Indians to score until the 18:08 mark of the half. A three pointer by Kincaid and a jump shot by Alexander on consecutive possessions gave the Bulldogs a 50-49 lead with 11:46 to go in the game—their first since the 4:26 mark of the first half. “In the second half, we got back into playing like a team,” Turner said.

With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to seventh in the conference standings. Catawba is now in third.

Wingate has a rare week off and will face Tusculum, who is on a four game winning streak, for the second time next Wednesday. Good hopes the break is beneficial to the club. ”We are going to try to get fresh and worry about us.”

Bulldogs outhustle Indians, 75-59

In Cuddy Arena tonight, the Wingate University Bulldogs’ women’s basketball team (12-9, 5-5 South Atlantic Conference) defeated the Indians of Catawba (13-7, 6-3 SAC) 75-59. Almost one month after a 59-64 loss at Catawba.

“The game plan worked really well tonight, except from the eight minute to the five minute mark,” head coach Barbara Nelson said. With 8:48 left on the game clock the Bulldogs had a 25 point lead. Over a four minute span the Indians scored 10 points brining the score to 66-51. The Bulldogs call a time out with 4:57 left in the game. Despite the Indians’ scoring run the Bulldogs never let the lead slip below 14 points in the second half.

“Our shooting was much better,” said Nelson. Sophomore, Kurie Washington, 24 points, along with seniors Stacie Rhodes, 14 points, and Sarah Rosser, 11 points, led the Bulldogs in scoring. “We have been concentrating on shooting during practice. My shots ended up falling in tonight and I was able to find the rim,” said Rosser. The Indians’, Milica Ivanovic would not be out done and shot 50 percent from behind the arc. At the 6:10 mark, Rosser scored a shot from behind the arc and seemed to change the feel of the game.

The Bulldogs also had the advantage on the boards, out rebounding the Indians 55-33. Almost every Bulldog had a rebound with freshmen Trish Logan and Sarah Wollett, as well as Rohdes leading the way with eight. “Dominating. Everybody was rebounding,” said Nelson. The Indians’ Dana Hicks had 15 rebounds.

After Catawba scored the first points of the game the Bulldogs claimed the lead and allowed the score to be tied only four times, all of which were in the first half. With 8:59 left in the first half the Bulldogs took the lead and held it for the rest of the game. “We needed to continue doing what we were going. They had to adjust to us. Last year at half time we had a ten point lead and we lost,” said Nelson.

The seniors have had a different color nail polish on for each game during the season. “Its changes each time, Stacie and I have not worn the same color twice,” said Rosser, “we came to play today. It’s our court, our house.”

The Bulldogs and their colorful nails will next take on Tusculum February 10 in Greenville, Ten.
